Walk the Alpujarras in the south of Spain
Hill Walking is a fast growing pastime, in Ireland and worldwide, which appeals to all age groups and Spain is a marvelous place to spend a dedicated walking holiday and it is also easy to combine a mountain and beach holiday.
The Alpujarras is one of those areas ideal for walking where you can walk from village to village or escape to the higher slopes of the Sierra Nevada (over 11,000 feet), depending on the time of year. The Alpujarras are located on the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada between the coast and Granada, about 45 minutes from the coast and an hour to Granada.
ABCWalkTravel makes it easy for you to enjoy your hill walking trip in Spain - we will organise your accommodation, your walks with or without guide, luggage transfer and generally look after you from the time of your arrival. We know the area well, we know the best walks and we have designed walks of different lengths to suit all abilities.
ABCWalkTravel is dedicated to the area of the Alpujarras, to promoting the area and at the same time maintaining it as an unique and beautiful landscape. The Alpujarras has an interesting history which is today still evident in the Moorish architecture and terraced hillsides that exude a sense of times past. The most distinct features are the flat roofed houses with long narrow chimneys and the balconies (tinaos) which join one house to the other across the narrow streets.
The landscape itself is a series of gorges and surrounding hills with whitewashed villages clinging to the hillside, beneath the imposing Sierra Nevada peaks of Mulhacen, Veleta and Caballo, all over 3000m. There is water everywhere from the melting snows of the high sierras; rivers, streams, cascading waterfalls and irrigation channels (acequias) built centuries ago. The walking routes have been here for centuries and were the main communication routes for the area, originally the mule tracks which were used for all commerce in the area. Some of the paths (caminos) exist since medieval times and are part of longer walking routes including the GR7 which runs all the way from Algeciras in the south of Spain to Andorra in the north. |
